The Dawes Arboretum is all about trees, and is home to over 1,800 acres of trees, bushes, gardens, and more. Drive the nearly 4.5-mile auto tour, then stop at a pull-off area when something strikes your fancy.
There are gardens, plenty of trails, and a small lake with its own little island. On the property you’ll also find a visitor’s center, a memorial to the Dawes, a small cemetery, log cabin, learning center, and the Dawes House Museum. They offer regular tours of the House Museum, though photography is not allowed inside.
On the grounds, visitors are not restricted to the paths, but they of course ask that you respect the plants. This allows for some nice locations for portraits of both people and pets—dogs are welcome! Most of the grounds are carefully planted trees, but some areas more closely resemble natural woods. If you’re looking for a variety of outdoor shots, this is a great option, and it’s free to visit!
They welcome photography for personal use. If you plan to use their grounds for professional photography, they do request that you purchase a membership at the $75 Chestnut Club Level or above.
